Dear Peanut

Dear Peanut,

I had a dream that you were two days old and you could talk. Your grandmother didn't believe me when I first told her. You said something really simple but for a 2 day old it was very intelligent. I looked at her and said, "The baby can talk", and she said, "That's impossible."

Then you had this look on your face that told me you had gone to the bathroom so when your grandmother was back in the room I looked at you and said, "Did you poop just now?"

You replied with "Yeah, I was bored", and it floored your grandmother. I think it means you will be very smart and very sarcastic. I am glad you will be taking after me.

Love,

Dad

Can you really ever be "Prepared"?

Trinity and I signed up for the Prepared Childbirth class at Baylor Grapevine, where we will deliver, and our first class was this past Sunday. Being the overachievers that we are, we were the first couple to arrive (approximately 25 minutes early). Trinity was hopeful for front row seats, until we arrived at the conference room to see that we sit in a circle.

Before class began we were given a plethora of brochures on all kinds of things...cord blood banking, breastfeeding, the importance of folic acid, healthy eating, etc. You get the point. We also received a quite extensive prepared childbirth informational book and class outline. I was excited to see that we would get to see the "stages of labor" video at our first class.

Class began once all 10 couples arrived in their seats, and we went around the room introducing ourselves and giving a little info, including:
-our due date
-if we were having a boy or girl
-if we had a name picked out
-our favorite thing about pregnancy
-one thing we could live without during pregnancy
Not surprisingly, the room was overwhelmed by expecting girls (I think it there were at least 6 couples), and we were the only couple who had chosen not to find out the sex of our baby. We were also the couple with the latest due date. Some couples are due as early as July. Our doctor had recommended that we sign up between 20-25 weeks, so I assumed that is what most people did, but apparenlty not!

I won't bore you with all the information that was given to us in the 3.5 hour class, but I do feel like we've already learned a lot! One of the most interesting topics to me was the discussion of the different hormones that take part in labor and how each one has its own special job to help me get through the experience.

It was also interesting to watch the "stages of labor" video; although, one of the mothers in the video had a quite atrocious haircut that made me giggle, followed by more giggles due to Trinity's exclamations under his breath in several parts. I swear we must be the most immature parents-to-be in the class. I honestly thought the video would make me nervous about labor, but it actually did just the opposite. I know it's going to be painful and a long process, but after watching it I thought, "I can do this!"

The last 30 minutes of the class was dedicated to breathing and relaxation techniques. I thought this would be a silly section with lots of puffing and counting, but it really was a very relaxing half hour. Our instructor dimmed the lights, put on soft music, and had all of us mothers-to-be lie on our blankets and pillows. We then tried to consciously relax all our muscles in preparation for our "contractions." Our instructor had us each clench one fist but keep the rest of our body relaxed and take deep breaths in and out while she counted out 60 seconds. This exercise is supposed to help us focus on relaxing our body while our stomach contracts during real labor. Once we'd done that, she had us all relax our fist and try to visually imagine our baby inside our womb. It probably sounds really strange and silly, but somehow it made me really relaxed! So relaxed that Trinity thought I'd fallen asleep!

I really like our instructor, and she has not at all tried to persuade anyone of her personal views. Although it was clear that she thought labor without pain medication was best, she never said or implied that we shouldn't get one if that's what we want. Call me crazy, but I have not made up my mind on whether or not I want one. Thankfully I have some time to consider the decision!

Holy Crap, there's something in there

Diana and I were laying in bed last night and she said, "Oh, the baby is moving a lot" so I put my hand on her belly for the umpteenth time to wait impatiently to feel my child moving around. I haven't had very good luck with this and it has started to get a little frustrating but I hadn't given up hope.

I got my face right down next to Diana's belly and started talking to the Peanut. Things like "Hey! Can you hear me?" and "Are you in there?" We waited and waited and finally Diana started saying, "Peanut, move around for us" and just like that I felt a pressure on my hand. It was quick and Diana immediately started laughing at the look on my face because apparently I was surprised. And I was. I knew this would happen one day but I guess I wasn't prepared to feel something press back from inside my wife.

We spent a good 10 more minutes trying to recreate the event but things didn't work as well. I did see a slight push one more time that made a bulge in Diana's belly but it wasn't much. Either way it was incredible.

Dear Peanut

Dear Peanut,

You are 22 weeks old and as of this entry you have already cost me more money than a year of comic book store visits. That's OK and all but I just wanted to point that out to you so later when you say I hate you or that I don't love you, you can look back on this.

We bought your baby furniture yesterday so I hope you like it. Maybe you heard your mother and I discussing which ones to buy. Let me clear up the conversation for you since it probably sounded like this...

Wonk Wonk Wonk!!!
Mwamp Mwamp!
Wonk Wah Wonk.

In reality it said...

"Which one do you like!!!"
"I am at the point where I don't care. Let's get this one since it is a set."
"Fine, I like this one. Get out of that chair and lets go."

Your mom and I are both very excited to get your room ready. We have spent more time than is probably necessary discussing the options but I think in the end you will like it. You had better because we got a Grow with Me bed so you are stuck with it for a long time to come.

Love you,

Dad

20 weeks

We're halfway there! I cannot believe how quickly this pregnancy is going. I feel like just yesterday Trinity and I were smiling at that little plus sign that showed up to say we were pregnant!

According to Baby Center, Peanut is approximately 10.5 ounces and 10 inches from head to heal. He/she has doubled in size in the last three weeks, which means my belly probably has too! I can feel Peanut moving more regularly these days...usually after meals or when I press my stomach against something (such as the edge of my desk). I've tried putting Trinity's hand on my belly when I feel movement, but it seems as though Peanut knows what we're trying to do and abruptly stops!

To date, I've gained about 9 pounds. My center of gravity is definitely shifting as my belly grows out. So far my belly button is still inside, but I keep warning Trinity that it may soon become an outie. He's still not thrilled about that idea!
This morning we got to see Peanut! The sonogram was a lot of fun, and the sonographer was relieved when we told her we didn't want to find out the sex of the baby. Apparently she feels a lot of pressure when people want to find out!
She took a bunch of measurements to check the baby and then we got to spend some time looking at the baby from different angels. We saw Peanut's head, face, profile, arms, hand, feet, all four chambers of the heart pumping, umbilical cord, and bladder. It was amazing. I'm so sad this will be the last time we see Peanut until delivery.
Here is the only good picture I could get of one of the sonogram print-outs. Peantu's face is along the right side of the picture. You can see his/her right eye, nose, and lips very prominently.

We were amazed at all the things they can check on a baby at this point. They measure the head for symmetry, check the nose and lips for cleft palate, emsure both the stomach and bladder appear, check the kydney for enlargements, check for hernia at the umbilical cord, ensure all four chambers of the heart are working properly, check the placenta, and ensure the baby's overall size is average. Thankfully Peanut passed all the tests!

Registering

How is it that a pregnant woman cannot seem to stay awake past 10 but the second she finds out you are willing to go register for the baby she suddenly has stamina to walk around stores for over 4 hours with a scanner? I am actually asking this question because I don't understand it.

Friday night, Diana and I were sitting around and decided with all this time to kill and her being out of town most of the month it seemed like the perfect time to fit in registering. Note to any expectant fathers: Don't wear flip flops to this event. I say event because as you sit down at Babies R Us and get registered and they hand over that little gun you think, "Man, I love guns. I can't wait to make this baby *beep*." you do not understand what you are getting yourself into. Little did you know that would be the last happy moment you have for the day.

We started this process at 4:30 pm and at 6 we had made it halfway through the store. I was exhausted, my feet hurt, and I was cranky. No, I wasn't the one who was pregnant. Apparently pregnancy is really bad except for when you register for a boppy or a set of sage and mocha sheets. I love my baby but couldn't we just put it in a laundry basket with some blankets?

We left Babies R Us at 7:00 pm and you know what Diana said? "Let's go to Target!". WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!??!? Was she crazy? What else could we possibly need that they didn't have at BRU? Then she said a word that instantly made me agree. Well, two words actually. The first was "Toys". The second was "Food". I made an agreement to go to Target if we could eat first.

Target was relatively painless and only lasted about an hour. It had a few things BRU didn't offer in store so I can't say it was a waste of time but my flip flops now look like two sheets of paper with foot holds stuck to them because I walked so much. The Target gun was cooler too.
